NOTICE OF JUDICIAL POSITION VACANCY

The 10th Judicial District Nominating Commission is seeking nominations to fill a district magistrate judge vacancy.

The vacancy was created when District Magistrate Judge John McEntee Jr. was appointed district judge on August 21.

The 10th Judicial District is Johnson County.

Justice Larkin Walsh, the Supreme Court departmental justice responsible for the 10th Judicial District, said individuals can apply or be nominated, but nominations must come on an application form and include the nominee's signature.

Nomination process

Nominations must be accompanied by an application form available from the clerk of the district court in Johnson County, the clerk of the appellate courts in the Kansas Judicial Center in Topeka, or online at kscourts.gov/judge/vacancies

The commission asks that nominees electronically submit the application form, attachments, and any other information or credentials relevant to the nominee’s qualifications as instructed on the nomination form to [email protected].

The deadline to submit a nomination with supporting documents is noon Monday, September 28, 2026.

Appointment process

The nominating commission seeks nominations and then meets to interview nominees. Interviews are open to the public. The commission selects who is appointed to fill the district magistrate judge vacancy according to statutory qualification and residency requirements.

Term of office

After serving one year in office, a new judge must stand for a retention vote in the next general election to remain in the position. If retained, the incumbent will serve a four-year term.

10th Judicial District Notice of Vacancy

The 10th Judicial Nominating Commission will convene at the end of September or the beginning of October to interview and select nominees whose names will be submitted to the Governor for appointment to the position of District Judge, 10th Judicial District. The vacancy is due to the appointment of the Hon. K. Christopher Jayaram to the Kansas Supreme Court.

All applications for this position must be drafted on the current application form which is available from the clerk of the district court in Johnson County. In addition, nomination forms are available from the Clerk of Appellate Courts (Topeka); at http://www.kscourts.gov/Judges/Become-a-Judge and at http://www.jocojnc.org/index.aspx

The deadline to submit an application with supporting documents is noon, Friday, September 4, 2026.

NOTICE: The current application form is the one approved by the Commission on April 1, 2026.

The Commission welcomes recommendations of nominees to fill the position. Such recommendations should be made on the current applicable nomination form, and submitted in electronic format, along with any other information or credentials which may be relevant to the nominee's qualifications. Only nominees who agree to serve, if nominated, will be considered.

Please Note: Statutes require applicants filling the position of district judge: (1) be regularly admitted to practice law in the State of Kansas; (2) be a resident of the 10th Judicial District at the time of taking the oath of office and maintain residency in the 10th Judicial District while holding such office; (3) have been engaged in the active practice of law for at least 5 years as either a lawyer, judge, or full-time teacher at an accredited law school or any combination thereof.
